Online Qualifier Structure

To advance to playoffs, players must place in the top 8 based on cumulative score. Player standings will be posted on Discord and updated daily after the games are played. All participants will need six (6) games to qualify for the playoffs. Once a player has completed their six (6) games, they will no longer be matched in any future time slots. Any player unable to make certain dates must give us at least 24 hours notice so that they can be removed from the pool of participants for those times. Unnotified absences for players with fewer than six (6) games will receive -60.0 per game short of the six required games; notified absences will instead receive -20.0 per game short of the six. Player matchups will be posted on Discord the day before the games. Players will be shuffled such that each one encounters the least number of repeat opponents. Players must click "Prepare for Match" in the tournament lobby on Mahjong Soul before 8pm to be considered present for each match. Please be ready to start at any moment as Mahjong Soul does not give any forewarning. Players on tables with no-shows will be reshuffled.

In-Person Playoffs Structure

In the week following the online qualifiers, tournament staff will reach out to the eligible candidates to confirm their participation in the Playoff event, which will be held at the University of California, Irvine. Players do not need to be UC Irvine students. The full schedule for playoffs along with rules associated with in-person play will be published in a separate Playoffs Document. Everyone is welcome to attend the in-person event and meet other riichi mahjong players, including those who did not qualify for the playoffs. We will have other tables available for attendees to play on.

  • All finalists (top 4) will receive cash prizes. First place will receive $150.
  • Qualifiers (players who advance to in-person playoffs) will receive snacks and drinks at the Playoffs event
